Fog x FLO Performances

Nakaya calls fog “the most generous medium” as its dynamic permeable form allows for limitless interaction, and collaboration, with others. For five decades, she has partnered with choreographers and dancers, composers, musicians and sound artists, light and projection artists, and visual artists and designers of ranging disciplines to create dialogues with her work as “fog performances.”

Performance Guidelines

From August 11 to October 31, 2018, all five sites of Fog x FLO will be a uniquely visible and inclusive platform for local artists and cultural groups to showcase their talents to broad public audiences. The Conservancy seeks proposals that creatively respond to Nakaya’s fog art and Olmsted’s historic urban parks.

Olmsted strongly believed that parks are public sites for all to assemble and express themselves. The Conservancy welcomes the opportunity to support area performers/artists to realize performance/program proposals that will further animate Nakaya’s art and activate and Olmsted’s parks. For Fog x FLO, we seek proposals that will inspire and enhance (not detract or distract) from a broad appreciation of these natural settings.

We encourage projects that make a DEEP impact with a LIGHT footprint: self-powered projects at “acoustic” volumes that can be achieved between dawn and dusk with carry-in-carry-out items (instruments, equipment, furniture, props). See FAQs for more details.

Grant Support

The Conservancy’s goal is to assemble an inclusive, accessible, and equitable program that affirms the parks as a community connecter for a range of art forms, neighborhood geographies, traditions, ethnicities, and abilities.
Limited funds are available to award micro-grants (from $500 to $2000) for projects of varied scale and complexity by presenters of ranging numbers and experience. Grants will be awarded by these criteria:

• Inspiring Concept: Bold vision and original interpretations of themes in Nakaya’s art and Olmsted’s parks: “immersion, inclusion, expansion, animation, evolution, co-existence, chance, serendipity, passage, coherence, dispersal, generosity, and learning from nature.”
• Promising Impact: Commitment to offer new engagements with the parks and expand experiences for Boston artists and audiences through feasible, achievable planning.
• Demonstrated Need: Clear explanation of how funds for budgeted project elements will help realize an experience that could not be offered otherwise.

To determine grant awards, the Conservancy will assemble reviewers who are invested in performance and arts programming for broad publics, and show a demonstrated commitment to engaging communities along the Emerald Necklace.
